Brought back memories of visiting my mother in Rehab when it was a relatively new thing back in the late 1980s/early 90s. I recall sitting through a talk about the family disease. I most remember the late Dr. Abraham Twerski giving a talk on enabling. You can find a brief video of him here: https://youtu.be/dcUAIpZrwog?si=Be8NMCKr2sGOVw_8
Amber, this was a really touching and informative essay. I feel so deeply this line: "I imagined pulling the worst memories from their minds, bottling them up and throwing them away." I'm an adoptive mom to kids who were in foster care. I long so deeply to take their bad memories and hurt away. The concept of resilience is, understandably, of great interest to me. I definitely added the book you mentioned to my TBR list.
I appreciated how you emphasized the role that parents play in helping their children tilt the see-saw towards resilience. I'm publishing a related newsletter on Monday: I'll be discussing how John Lennon was positively impacted to begin healing from his childhood trauma through loving relationship with Yoko Ono. It's an unorthodox take on the healing power of relationship but one that I find hopeful because it suggests just how powerful nurturing love can be. If you get a chacne to check it out next week, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

A beautiful, tender share Amber. Thanks for this insight into your journey. I'm sure your memoir will be powerful and look forward to reading it ❤
Sending love to you and your little ones, this is such a difficult place to be in.
I’m an adult survivor of childhood trauma and I believe your children are incredibly lucky to have you.
